Semiostylistic codes and biblical symbolism in the contemporary bulgarian novel: transformations of the sacred in Maria Laleva’s novels “Life in the rocks” and “The solitaire of the archangels”

Abstract. This paper examines the biblical symbolism and its transformation in Maria Laleva’s novels “Life in the rocks” („Живот в скалите“) and “The solitaire of the archangels” („Пасиансът на архангелите“). This article aims to present some of the most significant biblical symbols in Maria Laleva’s novels and to examine whether they are transformed in her interpretation.

The analysis summarizes some of the main results from the study of biblical symbolism in the two novels and emphasizes their role in revealing the symbolic meanings in the novels, as well as in expressing contemporary understandings of spirituality and human existence. The focus is on biblical symbols such as the rock, the archangels, the water and the word. The emphasis is placed on the way Maria Laleva reinterprets these symbols to convey important spiritual and existential messages.

An interdisciplinary approach has been applied, combining the semiotic model of Charles Peirce, corpus-linguistic frequency analysis (via software Voyant) and an empirical sociological study of the reader reception.

Keywords: semiostylistics, biblical symbolism, frequency analysis, reader reception, Maria Laleva, contemporary fiction
