Reading Road Signs: A Practical Application of the Multimodal Approach

Abstract. This study examines road signs as a complex multimodal semiotic system through the application of multimodal analysis, integrating visual, linguistic, acoustic, and symbolic modes. Road signs are considered both objects of semiotics and linguistics, whose meaning is constructed through the interaction of multiple semiotic resources, making them a classic example of multimodal communication. The main aim is to demonstrate the applicability of the multimodal approach in studying regulatory and informational signs by analyzing textual and visual elements, their semantic coherence, comprehensibility and positioning. The conclusions highlight the importance of integrated perception of modes for effective communication and road safety and provide a framework for future research, including comparative, technological, cognitive and interdisciplinary studies of traffic signs.
