The Bulgarian Archetype of the Harlequin Doll and Its Visual Representation (“Harlekino” by Emil Dimitrov – “Fairy Tale” by P.I.F.)

Abstract. The text examines the image of Harlequin in Bulgarian musical culture, tracing its development in the songs “Harlequin” by Emil Dimitrov and “Fairy Tale” by the P.I.F. group. Emil Dimitrov was the first to introduce this theatrical character into Bulgarian popular music, inspired by the tradition of Commedia dell’arte. He transformed him into a tragic hero who dies from love for the doll Meli. In “Fairy Tale” by P.I.F., the image of Harlequin is presented in a new, more human and symbolic way. Thus, Harlequin goes from a theatrical wooden doll (without a visual image, but with a voice) to a vision in human dimensions, in order to fully fill the figurative picture of Bulgarian musical culture.
